Explore the concepts and techniques underlying the construction and decoration of Nigerian pottery, while experiencing the actual forming of pots and drums by traditional hand building methods. African tribal design motifs and symbolism are discussed and utilized as surface decoration. Each participant completes several pots or UDU drums during this trans-cultural experience. The final day culminates in an outdoor primitive type firing, pot-luck meal, and musical drum jam session around an open fire in the evening.
SPECIAL: Prof. Abbas Ahuwan, my Nigerian Udu Drum mentor, will be co-presenting this year’s workshop. Abbas and I held the first workshop in 1989; he returned in 2009 and it will be a great gift to have him here again this year. Arrangements for travel from Nigeria are always tentative, so I will keep you posted. This year’s workshop cost with Abbas will be $450.00. If for some reason Abbas cannot be here, the cost will be back to the normal $350.00.
